Itinerary

Day 1 - Trip starts in Porto; evening orientation walk

Our trip begins today in Porto. Portugal's second city straddles the River Douro with its atmospheric historic centre sprawling upwards from the northern bank, while port wine cellars line the river in the Gaia neighbourhood on the southern side.

Our tour leader plans to meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for a welcome meeting followed by an orientation walk. There'll be the chance to go out for dinner afterwards for those who wish.

If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Porto Airport (OPO), which is a 30-minute drive from the hotel. If you miss the briefing, our tour leader will inform you of any essential information as soon as you catch up.

No cycling today.

Day 2 - Cycle through Porto and onto the seaside town of Furadouro

After breakfast this morning, we'll make sure we're happy with our bikes and make any minor adjustments before we pedal off.

We'll start our cycling journey through Porto's atmospheric downtown neighbourhood before crossing Luís I bridge, giving us wide-open views of the Douro River and the city beyond. Later, we'll continue along the Atlantic Coast to Furadouro and our hotel for the night.

Furadouro is a small, unspoilt resort with a long stretch of sandy, pine-fringed beach. Tonight, we'll stay in a premium hotel right by the dunes with views of the Atlantic. There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby to refuel after a day's cycling.

Our total cycling distance today is approximately 43 kilometres/26.7 miles with 180 metres/590 feet of ascent and 250 metres/820 feet of descent.

Grade: Premium Hotel

Day 3 - Visit Ovar and cycle along the coastal trail to Aveiro - the Portuguese 'Venice'

Today's ride starts from our hotel and takes us through rural scenery and along large estuaries and lagoons . Sandwiched between white sand beaches, dunes, pine forests and marshes, the landscapes along our ride are quite simply spectacular. Plenty of birds can be spotted. From Sao Jacinto village, we'll take a short ferry ride and then continue cycling to Aveiro, a charming town that is known for its canals, Art Nouveau architecture and colourful Moliceiros boats.

In the afternoon, there is time to explore the centre of Aveiro (often called the Portuguese Venice) or you can take an optional boat tour along the canals. Our hotel for the night is a typical Portuguese townhouse located close to the centre of town.

Our total cycling distance today is approximately 55 kilometres/34.2 miles with 100 metres/328 feet accumulated ascent and descent. 3km of riding today are on good unsurfaced sections

Day 4 - Cycle on coastal plains to Praia de Mira and transfer to Nazaré

After breakfast this morning, we'll pedal off, cycling past the colourful beachfront houses in the Costa Nova neighbourhood. The surrounding area is a shallow coastal lagoon rich in birdlife and our route takes us south, through the plains and marshland close to the sea, to finally reach Praia de Mira where our ride ends. We'll then travel to Nazaré where we'll spend the night.

Nazaré is a seaside town that has become famous amongst surfers thanks to its monster waves, created by a trench close to shore, that can reach over 20 metres/65 feet high in the winter months. Our hotel is located less than 100 metres/328 feet from the beach and the breakfast room has panoramic views of the town and Atlantic Ocean. In the afternoon, we'll spend time at the beach or climb up to the viewpoint and lighthouse.

Our total cycling distance today is approximately 40 kilometres/24.8 miles with 75 metres/246 feet accumulated ascent and descent.

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Single room available

Day 5 - Coastal cycling from Nazaré to Foz do Arelho. Free afternoon to enjoy the beach

Our cycle route this morning follows the coast south towards the charming beach town of Sao Martinho do Porto. From there, we'll continue to Foz de Arelho for a much-deserved lunch on the beachfront.

The afternoon is free to enjoy the beaches of Foz de Arelho which remains remarkably undeveloped and boasts a vast beach on the estuary, popular for windsurfing, as well as a great seafront beach just a 15-minute walk from town.

Our hotel for the night is conveniently located in between the old centre of the village and only a 10min walk away from the waterfont.

Our total cycling distance today is approximately 30 kilometres/19 miles with +/- 350m (1150ft)

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Day 6 - Visit the lovely medieval town of Obidos. Cycle to the small fishing town of Peniche

Our final ride hugs the sea as we cycle south until Peniche. In between, we'll make a stop inland, in Obidos for a walking tour. Obidos is considered one of the most picturesque and well-preserved medieval towns in Portugal. We'll spend some time exploring the old cobbled streets, artisan shops and old town walls - and possibly refuel with a pastel de nata (a traditional Portuguese custard pastry).

After our visit, we'll cycle back to the coast and arrive in Peniche for the night. Set on a headland surrounded by the sea, the town remains an important fishing port as well as home to stunning beaches and surf. After settling in our hotel, there is time to explore the walled historic centre and see the old fort where Salazar's regime imprisoned political prisoners only a few decades ago.For those who fancy extending the ride - the 9km- loop around Peniche peninsula features some of the most stunning rock formations of the entire Atlantic coast in central Portugal.

Tonight, we'll stay in a family-run hotel in a 19th-century building located in Peniche's lively city centre, a 5-minute walk from the Atlantic Ocean and the Peniche Fortress.

Our total cycling distance today is approximately 44 kilometres/27.3 miles with 450 metres/1476 feet accumulated ascent and descent. 6km of riding today are on good unsurfaced sections

Day 7 - Drive to Lisbon. Orientation walk and free time to explore in the afternoon. Evening chance to see a Fado concert

This morning, we'll drive to Lisbon (a 90-minute journey) where our tour leader will take us on an orientation walk before the afternoon is free to discover the city at your own pace.

Resting on seven hills overlooking the estuary of the River Tagus, Lisbon became the capital of Portugal after its conquest from the Moors in 1147. As Portugal built a global empire, Lisbon became the hub of international trade and the heart of this maritime Golden Age of discovery, reflected in the monumental architecture. A devastating earthquake and resulting tsunami almost totally destroyed the capital in 1755 and now Lisbon appears as a carefully planned 18th century city.

As well as awe-inspiring views and characterful buildings, Lisbon offers a good selection of restaurants. We'll celebrate the end of our journey with a meal followed by the option to see a live Fado performance for those interested.

Accommodation:

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Single room available

Day 8 - Trip ends in Lisbon

Our trip ends after breakfast at our hotel in Lisbon.

There are no activities planned today, so you're free to depart at any time. If your flight is departing later in the day, luggage storage facilities are available at our hotel. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to depart from Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS), which is a 15-minute drive from the city centre.

There's so much to see and do in Lisbon, it's impossible to pack it into one day. If you'd like more time to explore the city, we recommend adding a few extra nights post-tour. Contact our sales team to book accommodation.

Trip information

Climate and country information

Portugal

Climate

Overall, spring, early summer and autumn are ideal times for a trip to Portugal - though the weather varies enormously from region to region. The northern high plains has both extremes, stiflingly hot in summer, bitterly cold and swept by freezing winds in winter. The Atlantic coast, in contrast, has a tendency to damp and mist, and a relatively brief, humid summer. The Mediterranean south is warm virtually all year round. The islands have very different weather patterns due to their positioning and can have sudden rain falls throughout the year so waterproofs are recommended even in the summer.

Budgeting and packing

Optional activities

The following excursions and/or activities are usually available and may be arranged locally. Estimated costs are provided below for guidance only, are on a per person basis unless shown otherwise, and may depend on the number of participants. Prices quoted are correct as of the date these tour notes were originally issued but may change at any time due to currency fluctuations. Please note: These activities are booked and paid for locally and do not form part of your Explore holiday contract.

Lisbon - Fado concert 35-40 Euros

Clothing

When cycling: quick drying cycle tops, padded cycle shorts, lightweight wind and water proof jacket and warmer breathable layers where local conditions require. Be prepared for wind from the Atlantic in general and some colder days on the bike on departures in April, May and October.
General: Pack essentially for mild or hot weather depending on the time of the year.

Footwear

If you are not bringing cycle shoes then try to bring stiff-soled shoes as these are better for cycling - transmitting your energy into the pedals more efficiently. This becomes more relevant and recommended the more demanding the grade and distances to cover. SPD cycle shoes are not well suited to tours that combine sightseeing with cycling.
Comfortable shoes, trainers, sandals or flip flops are useful when not on the bike.

Luggage

20kg

Luggage: On tour

We recommend you bring a daypack and one main piece of luggage (total allowance: 44lb/20kg). Please note that on days 2, 3 and 4 we travel by public transport along with your main luggage for which you will be responsible, while the support vehicle transfers the bikes. Where possible the tour leader will help to arrange taxi luggage transfers between stations and hotels where needed. Ideally it makes sense to pack relatively light and for your luggage to have wheels. Check the bike details section to see if a pannier or handlebar bag is provided on the bike.

Equipment

It is compulsory to wear a cycling helmet on all Explore cycling holidays. As we cannot guarantee the quality or structural integrity of locally hired cycling helmets, it is a requirement that you bring your own helmet with you. Most insurance providers require helmets to be worn whilst cycling, so in the event of an accident, it is likely that any insurance claim will be invalidated if you are not wearing a helmet.

Cycle glasses to protect against dust, pollen and the sun, padded cycle gloves and a water bottle or water delivery system (e.g. camelback or platypus) are also useful. You may choose to bring your own gel seat cover for added comfort. A pannier is not provided so you may like to bring a small rucksack to wear while cycling. Other items to consider bringing are a sunhat and sun cream, torch, earplugs and insect repellent. Please carry some or all of your cycling equipment e.g. helmet as part of your hand luggage.

Tipping

Explore leader
Tipping isn't compulsory, and we work hard to ensure that our leaders all receive a fair wage. You may however, want to recognise a leader that has done a great job or really added to your trip by giving them a tip. We're often asked about the recommended amount. It is a tricky one, and down to personal preference, but we would recommend £20 to £25 per person per week as a guideline.

Local crew
Although voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly, you should allow approximately £20 of local c urrency for tipping. In order to make things easier for you, the Explore Leader may organise a group's tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the trip.

Accommodation notes

During our tour of Portugal, we stay in predominantly comfortable hotels, with one night in a premium hotel. Our accommodation has been chosen with location, comfort and authenticity in mind and all offer a good level of service and standard amenities like a restaurant or bar. Rooms are generally single or twin with en-suite facilities, air conditioning and WiFi.
While in Furadouro, we stay in a premium hotel, the Furadouro Boutique Hotel Beach & Spa facing the Atlantic Ocean and just steps from the sands.

Food and drink

On the Atlantic coast of Portugal, fresh seafood is understandsably excellent. Grilled sardines, octopus, and the famous Bacalhau à Brás (salted cod with potatoes and eggs) are favourites. Hearty stews like Caldeirada, brimming with an assortment of local fish are also a staple, along with Am\'eaijoas à Bulhão Pato, a dish of clams cooked with garlic and coriander. Pair your meals with Vinho Verde, a light and slightly fizzy wine that complements seafood perfectly. For dessert, indulge in pastéis de nata, the iconic custard tarts.
On this tour we offer the option to have picnics for lunch. At the start of the week you'll be asked if you would like to contribute €25. Your local team will then source, prepare and lay out fantastic picnics along your route on certain days. This also allows more flexibility in our cycling, as we are not always dependent on stopping in towns for lunches.

Portugal

Food and drink

Can you drink the water?
It is generally possible to drink the local tap water, therefore to reduce the need for single-use plastic bottles we recommend you bring a refillable water bottle with you. Your leader will advise you on refill points each day.
