Best family destinations in Europe

  1. Tuscany, Italy – Step into the wilds of Tuscany’s beautiful Turrite Valley on our Tuscany Multi-Activity Adventure tour for a fun-packed family trip. Arriving at the pretty village of Fornolovasco, you’ll canyon down the Rio Pinguino in the Parco Battifero, working up an appetite before returning to enjoy a relaxed lunch. Walk up the dry canyon and descend back down, stopping to explore the region’s stunning caves. We’ll end the day with a final thrill - a zip wire ride to the café where you’ll enjoy a well-deserved ice cream.
  2. Elaphiti Islands, Croatia – Island-hop your way through the Adriatic on a kayak, exploring inlets, hidden beaches and crystal-clear waters just off the coast of Dubrovnik. Based on the relaxed island of Lopud, you’ll enjoy a host of water-based activities such as snorkelling, swimming and paddleboarding. You’ll also enjoy a number of beach games with sweeping views of the jaw-dropping Dalmatian coast on our Family Dubrovnik and Croatian Island Adventure.

What to expect on a family holiday in Europe

How active are the tours?
We offer three different paces on our family tours to Europe, designed to suit different families and ages of children. Our Relaxed holidays offer slower mornings and plenty of pool time, giving you the freedom to enjoy Europe at your own pace. Our Moderate trips are more balanced, with a mix of active days and ample downtime built into the itinerary. Our Full-On family holidays are higher-energy, with some early starts and longer travel days. You can choose the pace that suits your family the best. For help choosing, contact our team to find the perfect holiday for you.

How old are the children on family holidays?
On average, most children travelling on Explore group tours to Europe are around 13, though each group varies. If you would like more information on a particular trip, speak to our travel specialists and we’ll give you an idea of the number and ages of children on your chosen trip, helping you find the right fit for your family.

Is there an age limit for children?
To make sure that you get the most from your European family tour, there is a minimum age limit of seven years on the date of departure for the majority of our trips. We have carefully considered the pace of travel and the physical demands of each activity when setting these limits to ensure everyone can partake safely. For some trips, there is a minimum age of 11.

How many families travel together?
You will typically travel with three to five other families. We have found this is the perfect number to spend time with likeminded people of a similar age and share experiences, while being small enough to get to the heart of our destinations.

What is the accommodation like?
We use carefully-chosen, family-friendly stays - locally-owned hotels, lodges and homestays with character and charm. Where possible, we’ll opt to spend at least two nights in each location so you don’t have to pack and unpack too often. As swimming pools are one of the most important hotel features for children, we always try to find family-friendly accommodation with pools.
