Frequently asked questions about Explore Family adventures
See below for the answers to our most-asked questions about our family adventures. Find out more in our blog post that answers top questions for your first-time family holiday, including trip pace, downtime, and accommodation.
How old are children on family adventure holidays?
The average age of children varies depending on the trip. Minimum ages apply for safety, but the typical age of children on an Explore tour is 12–13. Each trip page lists this in the ‘Family information’ section. If you would like more information regarding the age range of children on a particular tour, please contact our team.
Are Explore Family adventures suitable for single parent families?
Yes. All our family group tours are ideal for single-parent families. We can accommodate you in single, twin or triple rooms as needed, without charging extra for single occupancy. By travelling as part of a small group with Explore, the stress of planning a family holiday is taken away - we'll look after the logistics for you.

How many other families will there be?
You’ll usually travel with three to five other families for a total group size of 12–18 people. This ensures that each tour offers plenty of time to explore at your own pace while also giving your family opportunities to spend time with like-minded travellers.
Are tour leaders trained to work with families?
Our leaders are carefully chosen and trained to understand the needs of families and support children in a kind, approachable and professional way throughout the tour.
Do tour leaders provide childcare?
No. Our leaders are responsible for tour logistics and smooth running. While tour leaders will engage with children throughout the holiday, they are not expected to provide childcare. Parents remain responsible for their children for the duration of the tour.
How much independence do children have?
Whilst parents remain responsible for their children throughout the tour, children often choose to spend time together as a group while adults relax nearby. This gives children the autonomy to play together in a safe environment while adults enjoy some downtime.
How active are your holidays?
Tours range significantly, from relaxed to more full-on, requiring a higher level of fitness. Walking, cycling and multi-active tours are graded for difficulty. Take a look at your chosen itinerary for more information regarding the suggested activity levels.
Can children or adults opt out of activities?
Yes. All activities are entirely optional. If you may feel uncomfortable with a particular activity, you can either take the time to explore independently or stay around and watch others.
What is the accommodation like?
We stay in a mix of locally owned hotels, homestays, guesthouses and unique stays like safari lodges or feluccas. For more details on the accommodation on any given departure, please see the itinerary of your chosen tour.
Do the hotels have swimming pools?
Where possible, we always aim to stay in hotels with swimming pools for our family tours. In most cases there will be frequent opportunities to swim in seas, lakes and rivers.
How safe are Explore family holidays?
We endeavour to offer the safest possible experience across our full range of tours. All accommodation, transport and activities are regularly safety-checked and local leaders are trained in safety management.
What insurance do I need on a multi-activity family trip?
It’s a good idea to opt for a travel insurance policy that covers every country you’ll be visiting, as well as any activities you’re planning to do while you’re away. For further details, please take a look at the itinerary for your chosen tour.
What will the food be like?
Food is an integral part of the culture of many locations, and our travellers will have the opportunity to enjoy the traditional cuisine of their chosen destination. Expect authentic, freshly prepared food in local restaurants. Milder options are usually available for children and vegetarians are well catered for.
What’s included and what extras should we expect?
Accommodation, transport and the majority of activities detailed in your itinerary are included in the price of your tour. Optional activities and some meals are left flexible so you can choose how to spend your time.
Are there any child discounts?
In 2025 we offer a discounted child price for children aged 16 and under.
