Holidays to Belize

Belize is a strange anomaly in Central America; once known as British Honduras, it is the only English-speaking country in the region, blending Caribbean, African, Mexican and other Latin influences into a unique melting-pot. The mixture of culture in the country's food, language and music make Belize a perfect holiday destination for the adventurous traveller.

An Explore holiday to Belize is very much focused on the amazing nature and wildlife that this tiny country has to offer. Belize is now one of the world's leading ecotourism destinations, offering swathes of untouched rainforests, mangrove coasts and one of the most splendid coral reefs in the western hemisphere, second only in size and grandeur to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

In the wild and rugged interior, jaguar spotting in the world's first and only jaguar preserve, the Cockscomb Basin, is an exciting forest experience, while the wetlands of the Crooked Tree Wildlife Reserve provide a great base for bird-watchers, with opportunities to see the jabiru - the tallest flying bird on the continent. Snorkelling trips in Belize will introduce you to manatees, manta rays and nurse sharks among plenty of other brightly coloured fish living within the Belize Barrier Reef. The idyllic and laidback island of Caye Caulker is relaxing way to end a busy trip.

With borders to the Yucatan and Guatemala, Belize hosts an astounding number of over 900 ancient Maya ruins. The 2000-year old Lamanai site is one of the most atmospheric, accessible by boat and hidden in the jungle canopy, while Xunantunich near San Ignacio enjoys superb views over the surrounding forests and rivers from the top of its main pyramid, El Castillo.

Travelling on a small-group tour to Belize is a great way to get around a difficult country. Public transport is difficult, so travelling with a dedicated driver and vehicle, as well as expert guides and tour leaders will make the journey smooth. They'll also help you find that all-important wildlife, from the keel-billed toucan to the playful spider monkey. Jaguars may be a little more difficult!
