Italy: 5 best trips for culture vultures

Given Italy’s history, world-class art collection and extraordinary architecture, culture is a major feature of any trip here. But for dedicated culture enthusiasts, here are five of our favourite cultural trips in Italy.

1. Highlights of Puglia

The ‘heel of Italy’, Puglia is characterised by its rolling farmland and olive groves, the whitewashed trulli of Alberobello and some of Italy’s most delicious food and drink. Referred to as the ‘Florence of the south’, Lecce is known for its beautiful baroque architecture, including the magnificent cathedral square. On this trip, you’ll also cross into Basilicata and walk the winding streets of Matera’s UNESCO-listed sassi.

3. Cycle Dolomites, Lake Garda and Venice

Cycle an easy-graded route through the magnificent glacial valleys of the South Tyrol, with breath-taking views of rugged mountain peaks and colourful alpine meadows. Take a boat ride on stunning Lake Garda and end your trip on a cultural high with must-do sightseeing in Venice.

4. Classical Sicily

Discover the cultural highlights of the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily. You’ll explore the world’s largest archaeological site at Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples; stroll through the walled, medieval hilltop town of Erice and see some of the world’s best-preserved mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale. All washed down with exceptional local food and wine.

5. Cilento to the Amalfi Coast

Combine the dramatic Amalfi Coast with the rugged inland of Cilento National Park on this 8-day Italy cycling tour. Cilento boasts unspoilt natural beauty, with quaint, historic villages nestled among the pine forests. You’ll climb to grassy plateaus for stunning views over the ocean, and make stops to learn about the ancient art of braiding rope.
