10 places to go in September

Wondering where is best to go in September? We recommend ten great destinations just perfect to discover at this time of year.

1. Madeira

Madeira in September promises pleasantly mild temperatures, making it perfect for exploring the cliff tops and winding Levada Paths. This moderate grade Madeira walking trip begins in Funchal, where you’ll indulge in the fresh seafood that Madeira is known for. Meanwhile, in Porto Moniz, watch as the waves crash against the seawalls and unique rock pools formed by volcanic activity.

2. North Macedonia

Situated between Albania, Greece and Bulgaria, the land-locked Balkan country of North Macedonia is characterised by deep green rolling hills, rare flora and fauna including lynxes and wolves, and the peaceful lakes of Ohrid and Prespa. You can expect modest temperatures in the late 20s and beautiful autumnal light when you visit Macedonia in September.  Explore Ancient Macedonia this September and travel through Bulgaria, Greece and Macedonia to uncover the stunning scenery in the lost empire of Alexander the Great.

3. Jordan

September is a good time to visit Jordan as it starts to cool off. There is still a dry heat at this time, with an average temperature of around 29 degrees Celsius in Petra. What’s more, September is a quieter time to visit Jordan before the autumn crowds start to pick up in October. Get a great view of Petra's iconic the Treasury on our Jordan Discovery trip before venturing further away from the well-trodden trail to visit the impressive Monastery or to take on the walk to the High Place of Sacrifice.

4. Albania

A holiday to Albania in September means perfect temperatures for walking. Explore beautiful and unspoiled northern Albania on our Walking in Albania trip. Travel through national parks, wildflower meadows and luscious valleys, enjoy a boat ride across the glassy waters of Koman lake and feast on a traditional lunch cooked by a local family in Theth village.

5. Romania

Step back in time on your next holiday to Romania - home to beautiful gothic architecture, the Transylvanian Alps and of course Dracula! Try something different and cycle through the heart of the beautiful countryside, medieval towns and neo-renaissance castles on our Cycle Romania trip. Plus take a visit to the Bear Sanctuary to spot these magnificent creatures in their 160-acre home of oak and hazel forest.

6. Turkey

September is a great time to visit Turkey. The weather begins to cool off from heights of 30+ degrees, meaning more comfortable conditions for taking part in some hiking, snorkelling, sea kayaking and cycling! Our Active Turkey trip is wonderful way to explore the impressive mountains, charming villages and beautiful Mediterranean coastline too. Enjoy a relaxing day on a boat trip around the bays of Kas with plenty of opportunities to dunk and dive into the clear and warm waters. Did we mention the food? After a busy day you’ll tuck into some delicious Turkish pide and fresh coffee.

7. Crete

Greece’s largest island, Crete, features a range of different terrains, from white-sand beaches to mountains to gorges. This makes it a fantastic location for a walking holiday. September is a great time to take our Walking in Crete hiking trip, when temperatures hover around a comfortable 27 degrees Celsius. There is also very little rain at this time and nights continue to be warm, meaning you still only need to pack light.

8. Morocco

With Morocco’s temperatures in September reaching an average of 28 degrees celsius, a climb to the summit of Mount Toubkal is likely to be accompanied by beautiful sunshine. Over the course of a week you’ll trek to North Africa’s highest peak, visiting a traditional Berber village and learning about life in this rugged mountainscape. While this is a moderate to challenging trek you’ll be rewarded with some epic scenery, lifelong friends, and a real sense of achievement.

9. Namibia

This September you could visit the only home to the desert elephant and take a journey across the contrasting landscapes of Namibia. First time to Africa? Namibia is a great place to start! Explore the world’s highest sand dune in Sossusvlei on our adventure-packed Namibia Lodge Safari plus see ancient bushmen rock art and have the privilege of meeting the Himba community in Damaraland. The Himba people are Namibia’s last semi-nomadic herders and have become recognised for using a thick red paste, made from butter and red ochre, on their body to help protect them from the scorching sun.

10. Uzbekistan

Discover Timur’s city and the magnificent blue mosaicked mosques and mausoleums in Uzbekistan. The autumn season runs from September until November, when you can enjoy the warmth of the desert region outside the sizzling summer months. On our Golden Road to Samarkand trip, we travel along the fabled Silk Road and step back in time, walking through the streets of Khiva -  you may feel like you’re stepping into a scene from ‘Arabian nights’!
